Back to the gym today for Workout A. Worth noting that this is the 30th time I’ve done workout A. That’s a lot of lifting.
I don’t think my running is really affecting my strength training at all, but damn were squats hard today. Adding 5 lbs just makes so much of a difference. I was fairly certain that I was in failure territory on the last set, but I managed to push through it and completed the full five. Booya! New Personal Best! I made myself wait a few seconds between reps on the last set, and I think that helped. Everyone I’ve seen doing squats at the gym waits a few seconds between reps, so there must be something to that.
I’m not really sure just how high I want to go with squats. Part of me thinks that I should get up to 225 lbs (two 45 lbs plates on each side) and stay there for a while, but another part wants to see how far I can take it. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there, I guess. Something tells me there’ll be another deload before I reach that point.
Bench press made me very aware of the difference 5 lbs can make as well. They were just harder from the get-go today. I managed three full sets, but couldn’t push the bar up one last time in the fourth. I waited extra long between fourth and fifth, but that too was a bust. Only three reps there, so I’ll be stuck at 140 for next time. Still, I haven’t had to retry bench press in a while, so that’s good.
Barbell row was another day of trying to improve my form. I stayed at 115 lbs and just tried to work on keeping my back neutral. If I didn’t concentrate on it, my back was definitely rounding, so there’s still more work to be done. I’ll go at least one more round at 115, and depending on how that goes, maybe go up to 120. Better to get it right than to move up too quickly.
Cardio and weigh-in tomorrow. See you then.
