Fit Report – Nov. 11th, 2016 – 5×5 Workout A


Take one week off from the gym and play some old guy football, and after you finish your first session back at the gym it feels like you haven’t ever done those exercises before.

Seriously, the last couple of days, my hamstrings and glutes have been stiff and sore, as if I was pushing these weights for the first time all over again. And back at the gym today, weight that should be a walk in the park, 30 lbs less than my max, was so freaking tough.

5x5_a_0024I’m talking squats specifically. While I was doing them, my left hamstring and right glutes were positively angry with me. Hurt is too strong a word, as I don’t think I injured anything, but I could just feel those two spots just going ‘No, we don’t want to do this.’  Still, I managed all five sets, but it certainly wasn’t as easy as it should have been. How does the body lose strength this quickly? Ugh…

Still, a trip to the gym is a trip to the gym, and I did manage all five sets of five for all three exercises. With all of them deloaded I certainly should have.  I actually didn’t deload the bench press as much as the app recommended (although I only went 5 lbs higher than it said), because I didn’t feel it was necessary, and it was easy enough to do at that weight.

One nice thing about deloading barbell row is that I’m pretty sure my form was better today than it was at the heavier weight, so there’s a silver lining, at least.

I’m hoping two days off this weekend will give my legs a chance to recover, and that things will feel easier, or at least less sore, on Monday. Next week I really need to try to get to the gym three times, as the times I’ve managed to do that lately have been few and far between.
